The Army Volleyball Championship was held at the Aldershot Garrison Gym on 20 April 2012. The main aim of the competition was to introduce volleyball to a wider audience, develop teamwork and select players to represent the British Army team.

In total, eight strong teams entered the event from the UK and Germany, 1 RGR represented 4 Division. It was a hard fought competition; 1 RGR team were immensely strong and reached the final with relative ease.

The final was between 1 RGR and ITC Catterick, both talented teams but 1 RGR was stronger and were the eventual winners; we were delighted that all our efforts, training and determination had ensured that 1 RGR were worthy Army Champions.

As a result, five of the Battalion’s players, Sgt Prawin Malla, LCpl Munal Gurung, Rfn Krishna Khattri, Rfn Bel Gurung and Rfn Surya Jirel were selected for the British Army Volleyball Team. They have since competed in Holland against the Dutch Army and a number of local teams during May this year and in the Crown Service competition against the RAF, Royal Navy, British Police, Prison Service and Fire Brigade. Jai 1 RGR, Jai Gurkhas!
