GnERGY – ex-Gurkhas business case study

Many in the UK and Nepal may not be aware how well the ex Gurkha community are doing in the UK by running their own businesses and the excellence of some of these schemes.   Once such scheme is GnERGY, a pure Gurkha utility company in the UK supplying Gas and Electricity.

While we are obviously and rightly involved in welfare issues and this is of course an important agenda it is also crucial that we look ahead to the future.  It is our duty to maintain the Gurkha ethos and uphold the legend established by our fore fathers and in turn pave a dignified and solicitous path for our future generations to follow.   Investments would support this aspiration.  Gurkha Resources was the first ex Gurkha company established to create a stimulus to incorporate likeminded members in investment ventures.

Gurkha Resources Nepal owns 25% of the 4 MW Shardi Hydro Project located in Kaski district.

The building phase is progressing as scheduled and aims to be accomplished by Oct 2015.   This is a contribution to Nepal by the ex Gurkhas while the 25 years return from this venture can be termed as a perfect ‘pension scheme’.

Our major project GnERGY was officially launched on 24 November 2014 as a community owned company.  It seeks to offer customers a viable alternative to the Big Six energy providers including the rest, with easy, hassle free switching and no contracts to sign or any confusing small print. The company’s UK based customer service team speak English, Nepali and Hindi and, uniquely in the industry, offer a face to face service for inquiries about their services or assistance to existing customers.  Amber Rudd MP, Minister for Climate Change, officially inaugurated the company and to mark its first year of business.  She was accompanied by Aldershot MP and former Minister Sir Gerald Howarth.  Amber Rudd MP commented: “Small energy supplier GnERGY offers households and businesses easy to understand tariffs and has put excellent customer service at the very heart of its operations. It’s great to see companies like GnERGY entering the market, offering consumers’ choice and providing a strong competitive challenge to the Big Six.”

While Sir Gerald Howarth too commented: “GnERGY is a great example of the entrepreneurial spirit shown by so many former Gurkha soldiers.  I was delighted the Minister was able to visit GnERGY and I congratulate Major Dewan and his team on their progress.  I look forward to seeing GnERGY go from strength to strength in the years to come.”

The event was given excellent coverage by BBC South and the Forces TV produced a short and effective documentary.  The opening was well attended by local VIPs which included the Rushmoor Borough Council chiefs, party leaders, heads from colleges and schools including the Garrison Commander Colonel C Lambert Late Scots DG.

GnERGY is moving at a steady pace and with 1300+ customers which is increasing by the day it has set a target to reach at least 4000 households by June 2015 followed by a three year plan to reach 50000.  The company is managed by ex Gurkhas and currently has a workforce of 6 graduates all ‘Bhanja and Bhanjis’.    The recruitment drive continues and we are currently looking for two additional staff with an eye to extend this by four more in June.

The essence of the projects also confirms a positive picture dismissing all myths that Rushmoor is overcrowded by benefit chasing ex Gurkhas.  To the contrary this has not just highlighted the hard working Gurkha ethos but also sets an example to the wider community.  Add to this there is a well-established Gurkha Security Company managed by ex Gurkhas, restaurants, cab companies, cash and carry(s), and travel agencies all in fact uplifting the local economy and generating employment. It’s Aldershot that now thrives on Gurkhas and not the other way round.
