Next to religion and portraiture probably more artistic effort has been expended on warfare – battles, campaigns, commanders – than on any other subject. Were these depictions intended as a historical record? As inspiration? As motivation? As propaganda? Or as just something to hang on your wall? This talk looks at military art from the Bayeux Tapestry to the Second World War and asks: what does it all mean?
