Events that took place during the day included, Kathmandu football cup, Ladies volleyball, Nepal Football Cup final, displays by the Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas, and a Khukuri and taekwondo display by Recruit Intake 23. Stalls selling food, drink and various Nepalese cultural clothing and trade stalls were available to view and purchase from, along with stalls from the Gurkha Museum and Gurkha Welfare Trust.

The children were also catered for with fairground rides, ice cream and a slushy drink stand, which were also popular with some of the adults.

The Kathmandu Cup brough us some excellent football from the veterans, with the veterans of the Queen’s Gurkha Engineers (QGE) taking on a team of veterans of the Queen’s Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment (QOGLR) in the final. With QGE winning on penalties after a great game.

The ladies volleyball once again attracted big crowds to watch some exciting matches, with some excellent displays of volleyball skills. The competition was won by a team from the Queen’s Gurkha Signals (QG SIGNALS).

The Nepal Cup final came after two weeks of games around the UK to find the two finalists of QGE and QOGLR. The match had the audience on the edge of their seats and on their feet with some great football. The game at 90mins was at 1-1, so extra time was played. This looked as though it would also go to extra time, but a very late goal from QGE meant they secured the cup for the second year running.

We now look forward to next year for the Bhela 2024.
