British Gurkhas Nepal – 61 Years in Nepal

61 Years in Nepal

British Gurkhas Nepal (BGN) celebrated its Birthday on the 17th of September 2021 marking 61 years of its presence in Nepal.

Starting from the camps in Dharan and Pakhlihawa in 1960, BGN expanded to Pokhara and established its Headquarters in Kathmandu in 1989. Since then, much water has flowed in the rivers of Nepal and BGN has consistently maintained excellence in its services and harmony with Nepal and the Nepali people.

In a low-scaled celebration in Headquarters BGN Kathmandu, various awards were presented by Colonel Paul Smith (Commander BGN) to deserving BGN staff for their outstanding services:

Commander Home Command Commendation

  • Mr Gopal Bahadur Gurung, Pension Information Officer
  • Mr Suman Shakya, Foreman Defence Infrastructure Organisation

General Officer Commanding Regional Command Commendation

  • Ms Anju Gurung, Assistant Civil Secretary
  • Mr Dhan Singh Tamang, Details Clerk Mechanical Transport
  • Mrs Stella Subba, Housing and Purchase Clerk

Commander’s Coin

  • Sergeant Mimlal Thapa
  • Ms Sharmaila Pun, Receptionist Medical Centre

Commanding Officer The Third Battalion, The Royal Gurkha Rifles Coin

  • Staff Sergeant Samir Malla, Assistant Brigade and Unit Welfare Officer

Colonel Paul Smith Commander BGN, Major Narendra Gurung Deputy Chief Of Staff BGN and Major Ranjankumar Badgami Gurkha Major BGN cut the Birthday Cake together. The event was also attended by Gurkha veterans representing the Regimental Association Nepal (RAN) including Major (Retd) Bhimbahadur Gurung MVO, Chairman RAN and Major (Retd) Balkrishna Rana MBE, General Secretary RAN.
