Brigadier Paul Burns joined the Army in 1983, initially serving as a Military Clerk with 1 BW in Germany and Northern Ireland. He was commissioned into the RAPC in 1988 and after a short attachment with 38 Engr Regt, served as RAO 40 Regt RA in Germany and on Op GRANBY. After JCSC in 1993, he served as Adjt/SO3 J1 Rhine Area Support Unit before moving, on promotion, to the Manning and Records Office in Chester where he was responsible for AGC promotions, career courses, transfers and establishments.
In 1996 he attended ACSC 1 and was subsequently posted to HQ LONDIST as SO2 G3 Ops/O&D for his Black Bag tour. He then went to HQ 16 Air Assault Brigade as SO2 SPS and was posted, on promotion, to NATO Defence College in 2001 as a student on the senior course. Following this, he was posted as MA to the Senior British Officer in JCN (NATO) and in 2003, was appointed as CO Sheffield UOTC. In late 2005 he became Comd SPS 3 (UK) Div and subsequently moved to MOD, where he worked as the Army Focus in the Strategic Remuneration Review Team. He assumed the appointment as AD Current Ops DSPS(A) in early 2009 before taking over as AD Force Generation in July 2011. In January 2012 he was promoted to Brigadier and assumed the appointment Director of Staff and Personnel Support (Army). Brigadier Burns assumed the appointment of Colonel Gurkha Staff and Personnel Support from 1 August 2013.
Brigadier Burns is married to Sian and has 2 children; Rory and Ellie. He enjoys skiing, hill walking and travel.
