1 RGR won the 1 Division UK Operational Shooting Competition 2023

The First Battalion, The Royal Gurkha Rifles (1 RGR) won the 1 Division UK Operational Shooting Competition 2023 held at Stanford Training Area.

Lance Corporal Nischal Thapa was the top shot of the competition. The top eight firers of the competition were from 1 RGR. Brigadier Jean Laurentin, Deputy Commander 1 Division, presented the prizes.

1 RGR shooting team will now focus on Defence Operational Shooting Competition to be held at Bisley in June and conduct training accordingly.

The Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas and the Pipes and Drums of The Second Battalion, The Royal Gurkha Rifles performed a marching display for the Brecon Military Show at the Infantry Battle School Brecon, Wales on 27th of May 2023.

The Brecon Military Show is an annual event which aims to inform the local and military community about the partnership, promote understanding and awareness of issues affecting the Armed Forces Community and encouraging better relationships between the two communities.

The Junior Leadership Cadre (JLC) of The Royal Gurkha Rifles is a rigorous training program to develop and train the future leaders of the British Army. The program aims to prepare the soldier to take on the role of a Junior Non-Commissioned Officer (JNCO) and to take charge of their subordinates in a professional manner. This year Intake-20 were fortunate enough to train in a new and diverse environment, for the first time in RGR history JLC was conducted in the challenging terrain of New Zealand.

On the 25th of May 2023, British Gurkhas Nepal (BGN) was honoured to welcome and congratulate Gurkha veteran Hari Budha Magar who has made history by becoming the first person with a double above-knee amputation to scale Mount Everest successfully. Hari achieved this feat carrying his legacy of a British Gurkha veteran and the Ambassador of The Gurkha Welfare Trust. Colonel Paul Smith, Commander BGN, Lieutenant Colonel Rajeshkumar Gurung, Deputy Commander BGN, Gurkha veterans, Officers and entire staff and families' community of BGN Kathmandu were present to welcome and congratulate him on his success.

Corporal Sailesh Rai from Gurkha Company (Sittang)

Corporal Sailesh Rai from Gurkha Company (Sittang), based at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst was given the opportunity to train and support other soldiers on Exercise BLUE URBAN. This exercise involved more than 100 Officer Cadets from four University Officer Training Corps from around the UK including the University Royal Naval Unit. Corporal Sailesh Rai delivered excellent urban lessons and also presented his voice of experience on life in the Brigade of Gurkhas.

Boat School, Chatham with the help of the Brunei B

Boat School, Chatham with the help of the Brunei Boat Section has successfully delivered a two-week Hard Hulled Riverine Craft (HHRC) course in Brunei to personnel from the Brunei Boat Section (BBS) and two members of The First Battalion, The Royal Gurkha Rifles. These two personnel are the first two members of The Royal Gurkha Rifles to get achieve the HHRC qualification.

The course was delivered so that the students could get the maximum practical and theoretical knowledge. During the first week of the course, students were taught how plan the routes, chart work and the various rules required on the water. Assessments were regularly conducted to check the progress of the students and before moving on to the practical side of the course.

During the second week students were training on the Tutong River. The challenge was not only the river but the surrounding environment itself. The routes on the river here are very technical as there are many short and narrow bends, deadfalls, and crocodiles. Students were shown the various drills for man overboard, capsize and different movement formations and manoeuvres on the river. All the students were tested thoroughly on each aspect with the practical assessments conducted on the KB River. The KB River offers a technical route with twists and turns and narrow passages. All the students performed to the highest standard and successfully completed the course.

The course gave an excellent opportunity and experience for both the students and instructors to deliver and learn on the narrow Brunei rivers with technical routes which are very hard to find in the UK. British Forces Brunei now has five current and qualified operators to continue the operation effectiveness of HHRC within the jungle.
