My Deployment on Operation CABRIT Estonia

4th November 2019

By Corporal Vijaysingh Gurung 60 Squadron, Queen’s Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment

After a month of intense and focused pre-deployment training, 19 personnel from 60 Squadron, deployed on Operation CABRIT 4‘B’ on the 8th July 19 to provide logistic elements to the Kings Royal Hussars (KRH) who were in Estonia to provide Enhanced Forward Presence as part of the NATO deterrence deployment. Before deploying a temple service was arranged by the Squadron at the Abingdon Gurkha temple so the Gurkha Pandit could provide blessings for the wellbeing of the troops and their families.

Following the handover and takeover procedures from Op CABRIT 4’A’, we took on the responsibility of providing logistic support for exercise deployment and many more routine tasking. Our newly trained Enhanced Palletised Load System (EPLS) and Close Support tanker fuel operators got an opportunity to hone their driving and operating skills and vehicle maintenance knowledge

During our downtime, we were fortunate enough to participate in social and educational visits in the historic capital city Tallinn. We also celebrated our auspicious festival Dashain with members of Queen’s Gurkha Signals and many more Nepalese counterparts from different cap badges. A fabulous Khukuri dance performed by Lieutenant Ryan and Lieutenant Greenhalgh and was very much appreciated by the guests that we invited from the different nations including Estonia, France and Denmark who are all currently located at the barracks in Tapa, approximately two hours from Tallinn.

Before the end of the tour, we engaged in an interoperability exercise with French logistic troops which allowed us to test the capability of our logistic platforms and learn more about working together whilst also strengthening the NATO ties. Finally, on the 7th November 2019, EPLS troops from 60 Squadron, 4 Regiment RLC successfully completed four months tour in Estonia and returned to our home in Dalton Barracks, Abingdon.
