New to Brunei and a chance to explore the major cities

Visit to Bandar Seri Begawan and Kuala Belait, Brunei by A Company 1 RGR

As someone new to Brunei, Bandar Seri Begawan (BSB) might be one of the first places that you will visit upon arrival.

Just as we arrived in Brunei fresh from the UK, A Company, The First Battalion, The Royal Gurkha Rifles paid a visit to the capital, led by Corporal Dev Bahadur Gurung. It was our first step towards learning about the culture and heritage of our new surroundings.

Being the capital city of the country, Bandar Seri Begawan has a great deal of heritage that reflects the history of Brunei. As a group, we paid a visit to the city’s mosque and its museums, exploring religion, culture, and history. As people from Asia, working in Europe, we all agreed that Brunei had a blend of both cultures in terms of their dress, military uniform, and Royal and civilian buildings. This blend could be partially explained by the shared history across from the 19th century to the present day. As we observed the streets, owe could see that the majority of the population in Brunei identifies as Muslims and hold their Sultan in very high regard. When given the opportunity to taste food in BSB, we got to taste a blend of Asian masalas mixed with sea food, and various different forms of rice and noodle cuisines. Bandar Seri Begawan had a lot to offer, both recreationally and educationally.

We also visited Kuala Belait (KB). Compared to BSB, the city seemed more relaxed, peaceful and laid back. Most interestingly, KB PORT, KB beach and the administration offices are deeply connected with the history of World War Two and the Brunei revolt. Our visit to BSB and KB gave us an opportunity to experience Brunei’s history, culture, religion and cuisines and gave us an insight on the way Brunei culture and law functioned.
