Construction workers, with help from British Army soldiers, including from the Queen’s Gurkha Engineers, have transformed London’s Excel Center into a 4,000-bed emergency facility.
The 600-meter-long Excel has 87,328m2of space and is usually used for exhibitions and conferences. In recent years it has held the G20 Summit and various sporting events including part of the London 2012 Olympics.
NHS England is actively preparing for a number of scenarios as the coronavirus outbreak unfolds and is working with clinicians and a small team of military planners to support local health services around the country.
The emergency facility will help alleviate pressure on the health service during the coronavirus pandemic.
