Remembering Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

As we mourn the loss of our much loved and respected monarch, we remember Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and her long-standing affection for the Brigade of Gurkhas and the special bond she had with the Gurkhas during her reign.

Both the serving Gurkhas and out veterans are deeply saddened at the death of Her Majesty, as is the entire British Army, people of the United Kingdom, Nepal and many other parts of the world, who she has touched in some way, through her visits, support and meeting of leaders and people of the general public. During her reign she also visited Nepal on two occasions, which we understand she fondly remembered and the people of Nepal were extremely happy to see the monarch in their country.

The British Army Gurkhas have always greatly appreciated the close interest that Her Majesty took in her Gurkha Regiments and, in particular, those that bear her name: the 6th Queen Elizabeth’s Own Gurkha Rifles; the Queen’s Gurkha Engineers; the Queen’s Gurkha Signals; and the Queen’s Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment. Following amalgamation, it is also the honour of The Royal Gurkha Rifles to be the present custodians of The Queen’s Truncheon.

On the 11th of March 1954, Her Majesty reintroduced the appointment of The Queen’s Gurkha Orderly Officers, and every year since two Gurkha Officers have been selected for the role and it has been a requirement for them to attend Her Majesty at official functions. We remain Your Majesty’s steadfast, loyal and obedient servants and our heartfelt condolences go to the Royal family at this difficult time.
