A historical moment for the Brigade of Gurkhas as Major Baldeep Tamang Queen's Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment has officially taken on the role as the first Gurkha Major of the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps (ARRC) Support Battalion.
Major Baldeep Tamang has served 32 years within the Brigade of Gurkhas and now assumes the historic, auspicious and inaugural role of a Gurkha Major.
The role of a Gurkha Major is a privileged and vital role within the Brigade of Gurkhas. He is responsible for advising the Commanding Officer on all Gurkha matters. He is the senior Gurkha in the unit and custodian of Gurkha culture and tradition. Furthermore, he assists with Gurkha manning, welfare needs of Gurkhas families (in tandem with the welfare team) and is the unit’s link to both Headquarters Brigade of Gurkhas and back to British Gurkha Nepal. The job is the height of achievement and responsibility for any Gurkha soldier, and one we will rightly commemorate.
He has already played a vital part in much of the organisation and planning of the Battalions redesignation from ARRC Support Battalion to the Gurkha ARRC Support Battalion.
