Welcome to the new Headquarters Brigade of Gurkhas Executive Officer – Mr Glenn Trafford-Smith

Can you tell us your background and where you are from?

Born and raised in Slough, England. I studied for 4 years at Loughborough University, gaining a BSc in Geography and MSc in Globalization before joining the Civil Service in 2015. I have had the pleasure of working in some interesting and exciting organisations within the MoD, initially joining as a Geospatial Analyst at the Defence Geographic Centre (DGC) in London, before leaving on promotion to join HQ Home Command in Aldershot as a Data Analyst in 2018.

Why did you want the job at HQBG?

At Home Command, I always heard great things about working at the Headquarters Brigade of Gurkhas (HQBG) from both military and civilian colleagues. So, when the opportunity arose for a level transfer to Robertson House, I jumped at the chance. I was also very keen to develop my career portfolio and explore different areas of work as my time at the MoD up until now had been very data focused.

What do you hope to bring to the job and the Brigade of Gurkhas?

Due to the nature of the previous positions I have held, I have developed a keen eye for detail that I hope to bring to this role. Also, having worked with a lot of great people at Home Command and Army Headquarters, I am hoping to bring a breadth of knowledge and understanding to the Brigade of Gurkhas so that I can hopefully hit the ground running.

What has it been like starting a new job during the COVID19 lockdown period?

The lockdown has been equally challenging and beneficial for me in all honesty. I have not been able to meet many colleagues at HQBG and so I am yet to fully understand how the entire Brigade of Gurkhas routinely operates. On the plus side, the lockdown has given me lots of time to explore in detail certain areas of the business that a normal hand-over/take-over probably would not allow.

What hobbies and or sport do you like?

I thoroughly enjoy my PT and try to either go running or to the gym 6 times a week. My tiny claim to fame is that at the annual MoD Sports Day in 2016 I won Golds in the Men’s 100m sprint and 4 x 100m relay. I am also a huge fan of American Football (Miami Dolphins) and play at an amateur level here in the UK too.

What are your aspirations for the future?

In the near future I aspire to continue seeing the world – I love to visit interesting cities and exploring culture, particularly the local food and drink. Beyond that, starting a happy family is probably the next biggest mission on my horizon!
