The Battle of Kohima and Beyond to Burma Webinar.

A webinar on Tuesday 16th January at 8:00 pm when, in conjunction with the Kohima Educational Trust, Charlotte Carty and historian Richard Lyman will reveal the remarkable contributions made by Old Shirburnians and Old Preppers in Burma during the Second World War.

The webinar will focus in particular on the Battle of Kohima and the Old Shirburnians and Old Preppers who took part in this decisive battle. Known as ‘The Stalingrad of the East’ due to the ‘backs-to-the-wall’ defence, the Battle of Kohima marked the first defeat of the Japanese on land in Asia during the Second World War. It was a turning point in the war and this year marks its 80th anniversary.

In the webinar, Charlotte and Richard will also discuss the involvement in Burma of other Old Shirburnians and Old Preppers, including those who fought with Slim’s Fourteenth Army and the Chindits.

The names of those who made the ultimate sacrifice are commemorated on Sherborne School’s War Memorial staircase leading to the School Chapel and in the Books of Remembrance.

The courage, bravery and tenacity of these old boys must never be forgotten.
