All Arms Class 3 Bagpipe Music and Highland Drumming - Drum Major Course

By Lance Corporal Neshum Tamang, Assault Pioneer/Pipes and Drums Platoon.

In 2018, my journey commenced with the Basic All Arms (AA) Class 3 Drumming course. The transition from being a Rifleman to becoming a highland drummer posed initial challenges for me, as my musical knowledge was quite limited. However, through persistent effort and the invaluable guidance of senior Drummers and Instructors from the Army School of Bagpipe Music and Highland Drumming, I steadily made progress.

Subsequently, I successfully completed the AA Class 2 Elementary Drumming Course in 2020, followed by the AA Class 2 Intermediate Course in 2023. These courses were notably lengthy, demanding, and intricately designed. Nevertheless, I managed to excel in each course and achieve the distinction of being the Overall Top Student.

The Highland drumming courses not only equipped me with invaluable musical knowledge and qualifications but also instilled in me the confidence to perform advanced bugle calls and highland drumming music in front of audiences. Additionally, these courses prepared me to lead the Pipes and Drums platoon as a Drum Major. They also provided me with the opportunity to forge meaningful connections with fellow members from various regiments of pipes and drums across the British army, fostering a strong sense of camaraderie and enriching my overall experience within the military music community.
