The Basic Sniper Operator Course (BSOC) is a rigorous nine-week journey that tests the limits of aspiring snipers. This course demands a proficiency in theory, weapon skills and tactical operations. The BSOC 2023 course was run by the Sniper Platoon of The Second Battalion, The Royal Gurkha Rifles.

The initial phase laid the foundation for sniper candidates, covering theory and comprehensive weapon training. Participants focused on mastering the skills to handle the L115A3 sniper rifle. Crucially, this phase included the vital shooting skills test. Night Navigation on Salisbury Plain Training Area (SPTA) added a challenging element to the training, setting the stage for the demanding road ahead.

Transitioning into the tactical phase students were immersed in an intensive period of lessons and demonstrations. This phase was all about emphasizing shooting skills and operational tactics. Lessons culminated in formative and badge tests covering essential sniper skills including navigation, judging distance, sniper knowledge, camouflage and concealment, observation and stalking.

For many, the night navigation test with full kit weighed on their minds. However, repeated practice built confidence, leading to successful badge test performances. The art of stalking emerged as a highlight, showcasing the integration of various sniper skills. Operating differently than other Rifle companies, the experience proved to be both challenging and rewarding for those navigating the course for the first time.

The capstone of BSOC 23 unfolded in the challenging terrain of Salisbury Plain Training Area during week nine of the course. With sub-zero temperatures adding an additional layer of complexity. From advance to clear on the first day, to deployment into rural and urban operations in Copehill Down Village for 48 hours, participants were tested in diverse scenarios. The final event, a 10-mile loaded march served as a testament to physical endurance.

While initially starting with six students, the success rate showcased the demanding nature of BSOC 23. Only two students successfully completed the course, a testament to their unwavering determination.
