My Education Journey as a Gurkha - Sergeant Jiban Tamang
When I first thought about doing a degree, I knew it wasn’t going to be easy. Life in the British Army is demanding; long days, unpredictable schedules, and plenty of responsibilities. But deep down, I wanted to challenge myself and see what I could achieve outside my normal comfort zone. So I decided to study for a BA (Hons) Business Management (Economics) with the Open University.
Personally, education was never just about getting a certificate, it was about growth. I’ve always been interested in business and economics, and I knew these skills would help me both in my Army career and later in life. I also wanted to demonstrate that joining the Army doesn’t mean our learning journey ends as it’s where it truly begins. In today’s fast-changing world, education is what keeps us sharp, adaptable, and ready for every challenge.
The Journey and Challenges
The journey was far from easy. Balancing military duties with assignments and exams was a real test of discipline. There were nights when I was exhausted after work but still had to hit the books. At times, it felt overwhelming. There were moments when I felt like giving up, but I reminded myself of the values we live by as Gurkhas. Those qualities carried me through this journey just as they do in service. I’m grateful for the training and mindset that shaped me as it gave me the strength to finish what I started off as a young soldier.
What truly kept me going was my wife’s support. She was the cornerstone of my success and my absolute pillar of strength. Through every late night and every moment of doubt, she encouraged me, took care of everything at home so I could focus, and reminded me why I started this journey. Her patience and understanding meant everything. I couldn’t have done it without her unwavering support.
I also want to express my sincere gratitude to all my past and present Chain of Command. Their support and understanding made this achievement possible. From giving me the flexibility I needed to motivating me during the tough times, they reminded me that the Army truly values personal development alongside professional excellence.
Completing my degree has given me confidence and opened doors I never imagined. It’s proof that with determination and the right support, anything is possible even while serving full time in the Army. If you’re thinking about studying, go for it. It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it. You already have what it takes discipline, perseverance, and the ability to adapt under pressure.
