On 11 November 2025, fourteen badminton players from the Royal Corps of Signals, embarked on an unforgettable overseas sports visit to Thailand. Organised by Staff Sergeant Mohan Gurung from 249 Gurkha Signal Squadron, bringing together skills, teamwork and the spirit of Army sport for a truly memorable experience. Among the team, three personnel from the Queen’s Gurkha Signals.
The central focus of our tour was the VHP Badminton Masters Tournament, one of the most challenging competitions we have ever faced. Players of every level tested our skills, stamina, and teamwork. Despite the pressure, our determination and unity shone through, and we proudly emerged as the champions. This achievement stands as one of the proudest moments of our team and a testament to the dedication of every player. In Pattaya, we also engaged in friendly matches with highly skilled local players. Their impressive talent and fast-paced gameplay pushed us further and offered valuable opportunities to learn, adapt, and grow.
No trip to Bangkok is complete without visiting the Royal Grand Palace, one of Thailand’s most iconic landmarks. Its exquisite architecture left us in awe, feeling as though we were witnessing the pinnacle of human creativity and craftsmanship. Our cultural exploration continued in Pattaya at the Sanctuary of Truth, a breathtaking temple carved entirely from wood. Every inch of the structure tells a story through intricate carvings, blending Thai, Hindu, Khmer, and Buddhist beliefs. Walking through the temple, sunlight filtered through the wooden openings, illuminating the sculptures in a way that brought them to life. The experience was both peaceful and inspiring – a true testament to human artistry and dedication.

One of the highlights of the trip was dining at the second-highest restaurant in Bangkok. From the top of the tower, we were treated to a panoramic view of the city, with sparkling lights stretching across the skyline. The cuisine was equally unforgettable, featuring a wide selection of authentic Thai dishes and perfectly prepared seafood. Each plate was rich in flavour and beautifully presented, making every bite as memorable as the view.
We explored the vibrant Thai night market, a bustling open-air marketplace alive with lights, music, and the aroma of street food. From shopping for unique souvenirs to tasting local delicacies, the market offered an authentic glimpse into Thailand’s lively culture. On the last evening of the tour, we witnessed the Alcazar Cabaret Show in Pattaya, renowned for its dazzling costumes, world-class choreography, and spectacular performances by both transgender and cisgender artists. From traditional Thai dance to Broadway-style numbers, the show was a celebration of artistry, diversity, and high-energy entertainment.
This tour helped us to improve Badminton skills, but also allowed us to experience other cultures and generate new friendships.
