
Major Anil Gurung – Commander/SO2 Gurkha Staff and Personnel Support
Major Anil Gurung comes from a military family, joining the Brigade of Gurkhas as a 3rd generation Gurkha in January 1998, following his father’s footsteps. On completion of his recruit training at Gurkha Training Wing, Church Crookham followed by Basic Military Clerk training at Worthy Down, he joined The First Battalion, The Royal Gurkha Rifles (1 RGR) in April 1999 as a military clerk.
Major Anil has served in various roles within and outside the Brigade of Gurkhas. His assignments include: 1 RGR, Headquarters Brigade of Gurkhas (HQBG), Royal School of Signals Blandford, 36 Engineer Regiment, APC Glasgow, Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, The Second Battalion, The Royal Gurkha Rifles (2 RGR), Headquarters British Gurkhas Nepal (HQ BGN), 10 Queen’s Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment (QOGLR), Brunei Garrison and most recently Headquarters ARRC (HQ ARRC).
Major Anil’s commissioned in August 2015 and took over the role of SO3 G1 MS in HQ BGN who later re-titled to Adjutant. He completed his tour as Detachment Commander 1 RGR between 2017-19 from where he deployed to Kenya and Afghanistan as Regimental Administrator Officer (RAO) on Operational TORAL. He served with 10 QOGLR as RAO between 2019-21. On promotion to Major in July 2021, he was assigned to 2 RGR Brunei as RAO British Forces Brunei. He becomes the first Gurkha Staff and Personnel Support (GSPS) Officer to have successfully completed ICSC(L) and has just completed his IG2 appointment initially as SO2 Staff Support and most recently as SO2 Joint Visits Bureau in HQ ARRC, a 3* multinational NATO Headquarters held at high readiness. Major Anil assumes the command of GSPS as Officer Commanding/SO2 Gurkha Staff and Personnel Support (GSPS) from 28 April 2025, and as additional appointment as Commander GSPS. He considers himself very honoured and extremely privileged with the opportunity to Command and Lead GSPS and remains very committed for the betterment of GSPS and its personnel who are ably supported by their families.
Major Anil has seen service worldwide; in the United Kingdom, Macedonia, Kosovo, Kenya, Bosnia (twice), Brunei, Malaysia, Afghanistan (twice), Cyprus, Nepal, USA, France, Romania, and Poland. Major Anil is a keen sportsman but now with growing age, he prefers less contact sports hence golf and enjoys hiking.
