In an inspiring display of endurance, unity and selfless commitment, British Forces Brunei (BFB) delivered a 24hr Swimathon event, to raise money for the Gurkha Museum Nepal and the Army Benevolent Fund (ABF).
0700 hrs on 18 April 2025 saw a sharp blow of a horn by Lieutenant Colonel J Jeffcoat (Commander BFB), that marked the beginning of an extraordinary challenge. For the next 24hrs, the swimming pool at Tuker Lines came alive with relentless energy, camaraderie, and healthy competition.

Swimathon BFB

Six teams of ten swimmers each representing sub-units of The First Battalion, The Royal Gurkha Rifles (1 RGR) and Garrison Support Troops dived into action, united by a common goal to swim longest distance in 24 hours. Each team showcased physical stamina and mental grit, taking turns to ensure their lanes never stood still. In every hour, every stroke, day and night they pushed through fatigue, celebrating the essence of teamwork and purpose. With the rise of the sun next morning, C Company 1 RGR covered a distance of 72,750m and stood heavy and high carrying the winner’s trophy.

Beyond the swimming lanes, the charity event transformed into a lively community celebration. Various local handmade crafts stalls along with Nepalese food stall offering the authentic taste of Gurkhas, brought vibrant life and culture. Families, friends and members of local Brunei Community gathered in support, making the atmosphere not just competitive, but heart-warmingly communal. It was a testament to the strong connection between the local community and the British Forces.
