Exercise NORTHERN BAVARIA ADVENTURE 25
A Climbing Adventure in Wertach Germany
A team of 28 personnel from Gurkha Training Company in Catterick, plus one external instructor, took part in an unforgettable expedition to Wertach, Germany. Consisting of Kayaking, Hill Walking, Rock Climbing and Klettersteig (via ferrata), along with a separate team for Summer Mountaineering Foundation (SMF) course. The expedition aimed to provide challenging outdoor training for ITC personnel, with controlled exposure to risk, developing leadership, teamwork, physical fitness, moral and physical courage. The expedition also provided an opportunity for six personnel to gain the SMF qualification.

Hill walking took place across alpine locations in Germany and Austria. The activity was led by Corporal Jagadish Gurung (Section Commander ITC), who guided the group across challenging alpine terrain, including steep ascents, narrow ridgelines, and scenic valleys. In parallel, Sergeant Amir Chamling (Platoon Sergeant ITC) delivered the SMF course, providing structured instruction on mountain safety, movement on steep ground, route planning and environmental awareness.
Kayaking sessions took place on Gruntensee lake which was set against the scenic backdrop of the Allgau Alps, offering participants the opportunity to develop water-
based skills in a controlled but challenging environment. The session was conducted by Corporal Carwyn Dwyer (UAP CMT ITC), who provided basic paddle techniques, water safety, teaching strokes. Everyone quickly adapted to this new environment, with the calm yet dynamic waters of Gruntensee made the activity both enjoyable and educational.

Rock climbing was another key part of the expedition which was conducted in two areas near the town of Hohenschwangau and in Oberstdorf, both known for excellent climbing and abseiling routes. Under the expert instruction of Corporal Alisdair Szyszko (AAPTI Gym ITC), personnel were introduced to fundamental climbing techniques, rope work, and safety procedures. The limestone crags of Hohenschwangau provided an ideal environment for beginners to gain confidence, while the more challenging routes around Oberstdorf allowed for the development of advanced skills such as route planning, belaying, and problem solving under pressure.
The highlight for many was the Klettersteig or Via Ferrata, an alpine climbing route secured with fixed cables, ladders, and iron rungs. This thrilling activity was carried out in five different areas of Germany and Austria: Lehrpfad Gelbe Wande, Tegelbersteig, Ostrachtaler, Via Kessi, Fingersteig.Under the instruction of Captain Joshua Savage (External Instructor PJHQ), participants had the opportunity to gain confidence, moving on steep and exposed cliffs while secured to fixed cables using harnesses and lanyards
After the completion of AT activities, the team travelled to Munich. One of the highlights of the visit was a trip to the iconic Allianz Arena where participants had the chance to explore the stadium. The group also spent time exploring the city’s historic sites, trying local cuisine, and enjoying the atmosphere of Munich.
