First Steps in Darlington for Recruit Intake 26

On 28 March 2026, Gurkha trainees were directed to visit Darlington as part of Exercise Cultural Immersion 1. It was our first time venturing off camp since arriving in the UK. Before setting off, our Section Commanders taught us essential skills, including road safety, using a debit card, travelling by bus and communicating politely with members of the public. This helped to build our confidence before stepping outside the camp.

Darlington’s calm, historic charm impressed us immediately. We learned about Joseph Pease and his role in developing Britain’s railway system. We were warmly welcomed by many locals; some even greeted us with a friendly “Namaste”, reflecting the strong connection between the Gurkhas and the British people. We also practiced essential life skills such as shopping, speaking in English and finding our way around town, even when local accents tested our understanding.

On our journey back towards Catterick, we visited a post–First World War church, a peaceful reminder of the sacrifices made during the conflict. Back at the barracks, we shared a traditional Gurkha messing meal, followed by singing and dancing, which strengthened our teamwork.

This visit was more than a trip; it was a meaningful learning experience. We gained cultural understanding, practical life skills and greater confidence as a team. It marked the first memorable step in our journey in the United Kingdom.
