Running a Marathon near Everest

On 29 May 2026, a 14‑man team from 36 Engineer Regiment and The Queen’s Gurkha Engineers, led by Staff Sergeant Bhupendra of 67 Gurkha Field Squadron, successfully completed the Everest Marathon 2026.

This is recognised as the highest‑altitude marathon in the world.

After months of demanding preparation and high‑altitude training, the team tackled the gruelling 42‑kilometre route across some of the most challenging terrain in the Himalayas, starting at an elevation of 5,364 metres. Their performance demonstrated exceptional endurance, resilience, and teamwork in one of the planet’s most unforgiving environments.

Special commendation goes to Sapper Palpali, who achieved the team’s fastest time, completing the marathon in an impressive 5hrs 34mins and 48secs.
