Climbing in Morocco

In May 2025, members of 69 Squadron, Queen’s Gurkha Engineers, successfully completed Exercise TIGER ATLAS, a high-altitude adventure training expedition in Morocco. The exercise included a successful climb of Mount Toubkal (4,167m), the highest mountain in North Africa. The purpose of the expedition was to improve leadership, resilience, and mountain skills in a physically and mentally challenging environment.

The team started the expedition from Imlil, a village in the High Atlas Mountains. To begin acclimatisation, they completed a short trek to the Imlil Waterfall. In the following days, the team travelled across difficult terrain, including the ascent of Mount Taoudjou (2,600m) and a crossing of Tizi n’Tacheddirt (3,230m). They spent the nights at Auberge Mata Valley and in the village of Armed.

The team also took part in a cultural activity, cooking traditional Nepalese food with Gurkha soldiers to show the other British Army personnel an insight into Nepalese food. This helped to strengthen team spirit and morale.

The Moroccan hosts were very welcoming, and many team members noticed and appreciated the similarities between Moroccan and Nepalese cultures.
