The 32nd birthday of The Royal Gurkha Rifles (1 RGR) was celebrated in true Gurkha spirit by 1 RGR on 27 June 2026. The event brought together soldiers, families, veterans and distinguished guests for a memorable day of camaraderie, culture and competition. The event marked the Regiment’s formation on 1 July 1994, honouring its proud heritage and enduring legacy.
The Battalion was privileged to welcome senior guests, including Major General Strickland CB DSO MBE (Colonel Commandant Brigade of Gurkhas), Brigadier Pack OBE (Colonel of the Regiment), and Colonel Robinson OBE (Colonel Brigade of Gurkhas). Their presence, alongside families and veterans, added great significance to the occasion.
The day commenced with the Tule Ale Cup football match between Direct Entry (DE) and Late Entry (LE) officers. Both teams demonstrated excellent skill and determination, with the LE officers securing a well-deserved victory. This was followed by a fiercely contested Tug of War competition, where Support Company showcased strength, teamwork and resilience to emerge victorious.
Cultural performances formed the heart of the celebrations, reflecting the rich traditions of Nepal and the Gurkhas. Traditional dances performed by soldiers and families captivated the audience, complemented by music from The Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas and 1 RGR Pipes and Drums. A dynamic Khukuri display and a taekwondo demonstration highlighted the Regiment’s courage and discipline.
The event concluded with the 1 RGR Wives Committee presentation and an Honours and Awards ceremony recognising outstanding dedication and achievement. The RGR Birthday message was delivered by Rfn Sanam Tamang (the youngest Rifleman), followed by an inspiring address from the Commanding Officer 1 RGR and the Colonel of the Regiment. The cake-cutting ceremony rounded off the celebrations, with each company marking the occasion in high spirits.
