A 35‑strong team from A and C Companies of The Second Battalion, The Royal Gurkha Rifles (2 RGR) deployed to Kenya as the Force Protection (FP) Platoon in support of the British Army Training Unit Kenya (BATUK).
Led by Captain Santosh Gurung (3 Platoon) and supported by Sergeant Binod Tumbahangphe (3 Platoon), the team commenced a three‑month rotation delivering essential security capabilities that enable safe and effective training for United Kingdom forces operating in the region.
Working in close partnership with G4S security personnel, the FP Platoon maintained rigorous access control, perimeter security, and continuous monitoring of BATUK’s Guard Room and Operations Room.
Their professionalism has ensured that BATUK’s training mission has continued without disruption and to the highest safety standards.

During the tour, the platoon exemplified the Gurkha ethos of service, humility, and community engagement. Under the leadership of Lance Corporal Saurav Gurung, soldiers supported BATUK outreach initiatives, including engagement at the Nanyuki Teaching and Referral Hospital, strengthening long-standing bonds between BATUK and the local community.
Professional development remained a strong focus throughout the deployment. Troops participated in Harkabir Club activities, Junior Leadership Cadre preparation, led by Corporal Simsan Magar, and a diverse programme of Adventure Training (AT). Highlights included a Jungle Safari, a successful ascent of Mount Kenya, led by Corporal Sangam Rai and AT, including mountain biking, rock climbing, canoeing, and courses designed to enhance leadership, resilience, and decision‑making.
Team cohesion has been equally prioritised. Lance Corporal Anup Waiba coordinated a series of activities that strengthened morale, including go‑karting, quad biking, and paintball at Chaka Ranch. Organised messing and welfare events delivered by Lance Corporal Saurav Gurung and Rifleman Ujwal Rai, further strengthened the team.
