British Forces Brunei (BFB) hosted the inaugural Sultan’s Cup 2026 football tournament, in celebration of the 80th Birthday of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, Sultan and Yang Di Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.
The event was designed to strengthen defence engagement, build teamwork, and reinforce the enduring friendship between the United Kingdom and Brunei Darussalam, through the universal language of sport.
Ten teams competed across three days, representing the four Brunei districts of Tutong, Kaula Belait, Muara & BSP, and Temburong, alongside the Royal Brunei Land Force, Royal Brunei Navy, Royal Brunei Air Force, Royal Brunei Police Force, Gurkha Security Unit, and BFB. A thrilling final took place on 18 July 26 with the team from BFB securing a 1–0 victory over the Royal Brunei Air Force, becoming the inaugural champions of the His Majesty the Sultan’s Cup.
His Royal Highness Prince Abdul Mateen was the guest of honour for the final, together with senior leaders from the Brunei Armed Forces, Royal Brunei Police Force, district authorities, British Forces Brunei, and other invited guests. Spectators from the local community, serving personnel and BFB families created an outstanding atmosphere that reflected the strong partnership between both nations.
The tournament was the vision of Major Dillikumar Rai MVO (Gurkha Major, The Second Battalion, The Royal Gurkha Rifles), whose initiative before the completion of his command has established what is intended to become an annual sporting fixture. The competition reflects the shared commitment of both nations to fostering friendship, mutual respect, and defence cooperation.
The event was planned by Captain Jitendra Tamang, supported by a dedicated organising committee, match officials, volunteers, and sponsors. Their professionalism and commitment ensured the tournament was conducted to the highest standard.
