A great day at the Brigade Bhela 24
The Brigade of Gurkhas Bhela took place on the 6th of July 2024. Despite adverse weather conditions, a large number of attendees from different Gurkha Brigade communities, consisting of both serving personnel and veterans, participated in the event at Queen’s Avenue in Aldershot.
Various sporting events occurred throughout the day, commencing with the Kathmandu Cup (Veterans football), the women’s volleyball, and the Nepal Cup football final.
The veterans from the Queen’s Gurkha Engineers emerged victorious in the Kathmandu Cup, defeating the veterans from the Queen’s Own Gurkha Logistic Regiment (QOGLR) with a score of 4-0.
The women’s volleyball tournament featured a fiercely competitive set of games culminating in the final, where Gurkha Allied Rapid Reaction Corps Support Battalion emerged victorious over QOGLR with a score of 21-9.
The Nepal Cup was clinched in overtime by Queen’s Gurkha Signals, triumphing over The First Battalion, The Royal Gurkha Rifles with a score of 3-2.
Throughout the day, we were joined by 134 new recruits from intake 2024, who showcased their impressive skills in Taekwondo and Khukuri patterns in the arena. The audience was thrilled by their performance, and they received a thunderous applause as they exited the arena. Additionally, the Band of the Brigade of Gurkhas delivered two exceptional marching band displays, maintaining their reputation for excellence.
We were delighted to have several business stalls, as well as the Gurkha Welfare Trust and the Gurkha Museum, in attendance. Additionally, various Brigade units and associations had their own tented areas set up around the event. BFBS Gurkha were on hand to cover the event and a livestreaming team from Forces news broadcasted the final of the Nepal Cup around the world so our people in Nepal, Brunei and around the world could tune in on YouTube to watch the game.
We extend our gratitude to the organizers from HQ Brigade of Gurkhas and the support staff who dedicated many hours in challenging weather conditions to prepare and pack all the event tents and support necessities for the event to proceed.
