A (Amboor) Company, The Second Battalion, The Royal Gurkha Rifles (2 RGR) had deployed on Exercise PACIFIC KUKURI 18 where they conducted a number Defence Engagement Activities. Each of these activities was aimed at enhancing the name of the Brigade of Gurkhas and the British Army, building relationships with the local communities, which so warmly welcomed us while they were there.
The activities included a visit to Medbuury School in Christchurch and a Nepali Cultural night in Tekapo. However, the highlight was a visit from the New Zealand Defence Minister, the Honourable Ron Mark. A former soldier in the New Zealand Defence Force it was an absolute pleasure to spend time with him discussing the capabilities and experiences of the Gurkha soldier.

Captain Som Thulung, Second in Command of A (Amboor) Company has been leading with fundraising efforts for the RGR Trust whilst deployed on the Exercise. One of his more arduous fundraising events was to run the difference in height between Mount Cook in New Zealand and Mount Everest, Nepal. However, in order to cover the required 5124m of elevation he chose to run Mount John in Tekapo a total of 25 times. Led by Captain Som the five man team completed the event in 3 hrs 40 mins.
Exercise PACIFIC KUKURI 18 and the South Island of New Zealand has provided A (Amboor) Company, 2 RGR with the ideal setting to conduct various adventurous activities, set in some of the most stunning scenery in the world. The activities have taken the soldiers and officers of the company out of their comfort zones, whilst giving them experiences they will remember for the rest of their careers.
