Personnel from 242 Gurkha Signal Squadron (GSS) deployed on Exercise STEADFAST NERVE 25 (Ex SFN 25), a NATO led exercise, enabling and testing of communications and information systems connectivity between the UK national military representative located within the Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe, in Belgium and Permanent Joint Headquarters Northwood. 242 GSS were tasked to deploy a pair of Reacher Medium Terminals in order to provide strategic reach back connectivity to Ex SFN 25.
The deployment involved a demanding road move, but both detachments achieved full operational capability a day in advance of the schedule, which was a result of rigorous planning, testing and the technical proficiency. Despite the unpredictable nature of the Reacher system, the team responded to every technical challenge, from generator malfunctions to complex system faults. Detachment Commanders played a critical role, mentoring their teams through engineering tasks, fostering both personal growth and operational excellence.
The exercise concluded with a formal site visit by an OF-5 Royal Navy Captain, who presented the team with a prestigious 1* commemorative coin, recognising their outstanding service and performance. A cultural excursion to Brussels further enriched the team’s experience, offering the opportunity to engage with local heritage and deepen team bonds
