On 11 August 2025, a team from 16 Signal Regiment, joined by several external service personnel, embarked on an unforgettable expedition to Malta. The mission: to achieve the British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC) Sports Diver qualification. Over nine action-packed days, the group undertook progressively challenging dives, explored Malta’s breathtaking underwater landscapes and historic wrecks, and forged stronger team bonds, all with a healthy dose of humour and camaraderie.

Diving commenced at Cirkewwa, where participants practised essential underwater skills such as Delayed Surface Marker Buoy deployment and underwater navigation. Memorable moments included swimming through a natural underwater arch and exploring the reef formation known as “The Old Man’s Nose.” As the week progressed, the dives became increasingly complex and exhilarating. In Valletta’s Grand Harbour, the team explored the wreck of HMS Māori, a British destroyer sunk during the Second World War, offering a haunting yet captivating low-visibility diving experience.

Under the expert guidance of Sub-Aqua Diving Supervisors Squadron Leader Mark Brabon and Flight Sergeant Philip James-Moores, the team followed a meticulously planned and diverse training programme. From vibrant reefs to historic war wrecks, each dive presented new challenges and learning opportunities. The deep dives were a particular highlight, with descents beyond 30 metres to explore wrecks such as the P29 patrol boat and the Um El Faroud, a Libyan oil tanker resting at 40 metres. These dives tested technical skills and offered thrilling encounters with marine life including groupers, octopus, and stingrays. The final day of diving took place around Comino and the Blue Lagoon, where qualification dives were completed on the P31 patrol boat and the MV Karwella. With crystal-clear waters and stunning wrecks, it was a breathtaking conclusion to an extraordinary adventure.

Beyond the wetsuits and regulators, the team enjoyed a well-earned decompression day exploring Malta’s cultural treasures in Valletta, the capital city. Highlights included a visit to “The Pub,” famously associated with actor Oliver Reed. By the end of the expedition, every participant had successfully achieved their BSAC Sports Diver qualification, returning to the United Kingdom with enhanced skills, renewed confidence, and a wealth of unforgettable memories.

Special recognition goes to Captain and Staff Sergeant Arjun Limbu, (Expedition Leader), for their exceptional planning and leadership, which ensured the success of the exercise. Exercise DRAGON DEEP DIVER 2025 was not merely a training event, it was a powerful testament to adventure, teamwork, and a shared passion for the deep blue sea.
