Major General Robin Lindsay CBE (Military Secretary) visits HQ Brigade of Gurkhas

Robin Lindsay joined the British Army in 1994, serving with The Black Watch (Royal Highland
Regiment) in Scotland, Hong Kong and Germany. He also held leadership positions on operations at
various levels in Northern Ireland, Kosovo and on combat operations in Iraq. Thereafter he served
with the Royal Regiment of Scotland, including two tours in Afghanistan and command of a
battalion.

Robin has considerable experience in strategy and policy, particularly in the personnel area. He has
worked at the military strategic level in the Ministry of Defence and in Army Headquarters as a
personnel policy lead. In 2014 he was part of the team which conducted the Women in Ground Close
Combat Review, during which he co-authored a seminal report that led to the opening of all posts in
Defence to women.

He has a passion for development through education and has worked in a number of roles in the
delivery of professional military education. In 2017 he established the General Staff Centre,
delivering leadership training and education for the Army’s most senior officers. Subsequently he
established the Land Command and Staff College, which provides early and mid-career education for
the Army’s officer cohort. He has also been a mentor with Moving Ahead and the 30% Club, who are
a leading cross-company mentoring programme.

He has commanded 51st Infantry Brigade and Headquarters Scotland for three years, which included
the period of the COVID pandemic during which, amongst other responsibilities, he led Defence’s
support to the Scottish Government and Local Authorities. He assumed his current role in October
2023. As the Military Secretary, he is the lead for the Army’s career and talent management, and in
his role as General Officer Scotland he is the focal point for the Army’s strategic engagement in
Scotland.

The General holds a BSc in Sociology and a Master’s degree in War Studies. He has a Level 8 Award in
Strategic Leadership and Management and recently completed a PGCAPHE with Kings College
London.
