Major Narendra Kumar Gurung - Deputy Chief of Staff Headquarters Brigade of Gurkhas

Major Narendra Kumar Gurung (Gurkha Staff and Personnel Support (GSPS)), commissioned from ranks into The Royal Gurkha Rifles in April 2009 having joined the 2nd Battalion, 2nd King Edward VII Own Gurkha Rifles (2/2 GR) in 1989 as a Regimental Clerk. Since commissioning, his appointments have included SO3 Gurkha Manpower and Transfers at DM(A) managing the bulge created by changes in the Gurkha Terms and Conditions of Service, on regimental duty as the AGC(SPS) Field Detachment Commander 1st Battalion The Yorkshire Regiment in Germany during Operation HERRICK 15. He went on to establish the Regimental Administration Officer 1st Military Working Dog (MWD) Regiment in Sennelager in November 2012. Early into his tour, he took on the mantle of the Adjutant 1 MWD Regiment with the Squadrons continually deploying on Operation HERRICK tours. He was awarded the Certificate of Meritorious Service in 2014 by the General Officer Commanding (GOC) Force Troops Command for his exceptional meritorious service. RAO 1st MWD Regiment tour came to an end in summer 2015 after seeing through the Regiment rebasing from Germany to the UK under Operation BORONA.

Major Narendra was appointed Chief Instructor Learning Development Wing (LDW) Catterick in November 2015, and later in the Summer of 2017 he was promoted and assigned as the Deputy Chief of Staff Headquarters Brigade of Gurkhas (DCOS HQBG), and takes pride in orchestrating the LDW move from Catterick to its new home in Camberley. He was also appointed the Officer Commanding Gurkha Staff and Personnel Support Company (OC GSPS) and introduced changes to bolster identity and sense of belonging in a cap badge which is geographically dispersed. His deployment on Operation TORAL 9 over the period September 2019 – April 2020 as the Theatre SO2 J1/O&D for the deployed British Forces and also witnessed start of the COVID19 in Afghanistan. In July 2020 Major Narendra was part of the special RAF flight to Kathmandu to take over as the Deputy Chief of Staff HQ British Gurkhas Nepal. For his outstanding professional performance in a theatre marred by COVID19, Major Narendra was awarded a Commander Home Command Commendation in 2022.

He was recalled in the Summer of 2022 to implement/establish the GSPS Sub-Unit Command appointment. As part of the recent change in the title to ‘SO2/Commander GSPS’, he was appointed the 1st Commander GSPS.

Major Narendra has once again been assigned as the Deputy Chief of Staff HQ Brigade of Gurkhas as his final tour of duty and looks forward to working for the betterment of the Brigade of Gurkhas.
