The Swan Doko Challenge - Celebrating 75 Years of Queen's Gurkha Signals
In celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Queen’s Gurkha Signals, the 250 Gurkha Signal Squadron hosted the Swan Doko Challenge at the 30 Signal Regiment on the 1st of July 2024. Coordinated by Corporal Ashish and his team, this significant event was a part of the Commanding Officers’ Cup. It simulated the gruelling Doko Race, where participants carried a 15kg weight in a traditional Doko Nepalese basket, over a challenging distance of 5.8km.

The event drew in interest from across the Regiment, who competed in both individual and inter-squadron categories for the titles of fastest male, fastest female, and fastest squadron. The aims of the event were, enhancing soldiers’ mental and physical resilience, fostering team cohesion, and promoting Gurkha cultural within the broader Regiment. These objectives are crucial for maintaining the operational effectiveness and team spirit that characterize the Queen’s Gurkha Signals.
The event had a charitable dimension, aiming to raise funds for two notable causes, the Gurkha Welfare Trust (GWT) and the National Autistic Society.
Following the race, traditional Nepalese cuisine, featuring the renowned momo dumplings, was served to enrich the cultural experience.
This event was a fitting tribute to the 75th anniversary of the Queen’s Gurkha Signals. It celebrated their enduring legacy, resilience, and commitment to excellence. By enhancing physical and mental robustness, building team cohesion, and promoting cultural heritage, the event ensured that the proud traditions of the Gurkhas will continue to inspire future generations.
