On 8 September 2025, Lieutenant General Nirmal Kumar Thapa NDC, PSC who is currently serving as a Vice Chief of the Army Staff, Nepali Army, made an office call to HQ Brigade of Gurkhas to meet with key staff and receive an update on the Brigade of Gurkhas.

General Thapa was born in Lalitpur, Nepal and joined the Nepali Army as an Officer Cadet in 1987 commissioning into the Pashupati Prasad Battalion, as Second Lieutenant in 1988. During his career, General Thapa has completed various professional courses, both at home and abroad, among which to mention a few are National Defense College-Bangladesh, Higher Command and Management Course-Nepal, Army Command and Staff College-Nepal, and Comprehensive Crisis Management Course-USA.

He has participated in seminars abroad regarding Multinational Force Standard Ops Procedure in Malaysia, the Colombo Defense Seminar in Sri Lanka and Workshop on ICRC-International Rules Governing Military Operations (SWIRMO), Senior Strategic Leadership program in the UK.

General Thapa has contributed immensely to the global peace effort with deployment throughout several United Nations Peace Missions. He had served as a Platoon Commander in the UNPROFOR Mission in former Yugoslavia, Logistic Company Commander in UNIFIL in Lebanon, a JOC Operation Officer in UNMEE- Ethiopia & Eretria, a Military Observer in MONUSCO-DR Congo. General Thapa served as a HOM/FC in middle East, Golan Heights, the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) since 14 Sep 2022-14 Dec 2024.

General Thapa, holds the prestigious gallantry medals, SUPRABAL JANA SEWA SHREE (III), GORKHA DAKSHINBAHU (IV).
