The Call of Nepal: The Remarkable Life of Lieutenant Colonel John P Cross OBE
A Film to Celebrate the Remarkable life of Lieutenant Colonel John P Cross OBE
At 101, Lieutenant Colonel John Cross is one of the last living witnesses to a century of conflict, and the embodiment of the extraordinary bond between Britain, the Gurkhas and Nepal. Known, admired and loved throughout the Brigade and the wider Nepali community, his remarkable life spans the campaigns in which Gurkhas have fought, from Burma in the Second World War to Malaya and Borneo, as well as his service as Defence Attaché in Laos during the Vietnam War.
The final years of his service saw him running the Brigade’s activities in West Nepal as DRO, first in Paklihawa and latterly in Pokhara.
On retirement, he settled in Nepal, became a Nepalese citizen and lives there with his adopted family whilst still regularly attending the BGC Pokhara to welcome new recruits into the Brigade.

The Call of Nepal: The Remarkable Life of Lieutenant Colonel John P Cross OBE will be filmed intimately at his home in Nepal by Grammar Productions. The film will reveal not only the soldier, but the warmth, wit and hard-won philosophy of a man universally known as “J P Cross Baje” – grandfather.
We have a precious, and narrowing, window in which to capture John’s story in his own voice. With the support of The Gurkha Museum Trust, we are raising the funds needed to make this film. Your support will help preserve the story of an exceptional man: his service alongside the Gurkhas, his deep affection for Nepal and the Nepalese people, and the remarkable life he has lived.
We hope you will help us ensure that John’s voice, his memories and his story are not lost, but remain as a testament for future generations.

We are raising funds to make The Call of Nepal, a lasting film record of Lt Col John Cross and his extraordinary life with the Gurkhas and in Nepal.
Filmed at his home, the film will capture John telling his own story in his own formidable style; his stories of the Gurkhas alongside whom he served, the countries in which he served and lived, and the people and places that have meant so much to him.
