242 GSS Visit Old Trafford Stadium – Theatre of Dreams
By Signaller Gaurab Shrestha, 242 Gurkha Signal Squadron
Known as the “Theatre of Dreams”, Old Trafford is one of the world’s most iconic sporting venues, a stadium defined by history, tradition and global recognition. It has hosted generations of footballing greats and many of the game’s most memorable moments. Seventeen personnel from 242 Gurkha Signal Squadron had the opportunity to visit this renowned ground.
Led by Lance Corporal Dipesh Thapa Magar, the educational visit offered a detailed insight into the history of Manchester United Football Club, its achievements, and the organisation behind one of the world’s most successful sporting institutions. The group began at the Manchester United Museum, exploring the club’s distinguished heritage through trophies, photographs, memorabilia and interactive displays that chart its evolution since 1878.

The visit continued with a behind‑the‑scenes stadium tour, guided by Philip, whose knowledge and enthusiasm brought Old Trafford’s history vividly to life. The tour included the players’ dressing rooms, the famous tunnel, pitch‑side areas and the manager’s dugouts. Along the way, Philip shared stories of the personalities who shaped the club, including the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson.
For me, as a young soldier, the experience was both memorable and meaningful. It provided an opportunity to step away from our usual working environment, broaden our understanding and appreciate a venue that has played a defining role in sporting history. The visit also highlighted the importance of leadership, teamwork, organisation and attention to detail, principles that resonate strongly within both elite sport and military service.
It was a day to remember.
