Winning Exercise KESWICK RUNNER 39

The Royal Corps of Signals Running Club Athlete Development Week, Exercise KESWICK RUNNER 39 (Ex KR 39), provided a superb opportunity for soldiers to test themselves, broaden their knowledge and develop holistically as runners. Now in its 29th year, the programme welcomes both Regular and Reserve personnel, from complete novices to highly experienced athletes. This year, around 30 runners attended the week‑long package held at Denton House, Keswick, in September 2026.

Across the week, participants undertook a varied programme of practical training, including threshold runs, hill sessions and long‑distance endurance work. Each session presented its own challenge, building fitness, confidence and a deeper understanding of structured training. These practical elements were reinforced by theory sessions covering injury prevention, training zones, nutrition and the support available through Army sports funding. Additional guidance on stretching and recovery techniques further enhanced the learning experience.

The week concluded with a demanding five‑mile uphill race over a steep and unforgiving route. I was proud to win this final event and be crowned the overall winner of Ex KR 39, a memorable and rewarding end to an excellent week of development.

I highly recommend this training opportunity to anyone with an interest in running, whether you are taking your first steps or already an experienced competitor.
