British Gurkhas Nepal (BGN) took great pleasure as Kellie Reagan McGinley-Smith, one of the BGN’s family members, received the Forces Families Award 2025 in the Away from Home category. Her selfless and tireless efforts in supporting the military and local communities and spearheading charity initiatives, were deservedly recognised with the award, which is presented to a family or family member based overseas who has gone above and beyond to help their local Armed Forces community.
Kellie made an extraordinary impact during her assignment to Kathmandu, Nepal, overcoming significant challenges to enrich the BGN and local communities. She revitalised the BGN library and established a highly successful welfare community hub, creating welcoming spaces for learning and connection. Her popular painting classes have nurtured creativity and fostered community spirit, benefiting over 95 individuals. Kelly also spearheaded charity initiatives, including organising the ‘Run BGN Run’ event and managing the Thrift Shop, raising substantial funds for SSAFA and local causes.
The Award was presented by Major Gyanbahadur Dhenga (Gurkha Major BGN), during an event organized by the Welfare Department at BGN. Kellie’s acceptance speech was also highlighted at the Celebrating Forces Families Awards 2025, which took place in London on 26 April 2025. In her address, Kellie expressed her gratitude to BGN and the Welfare Team for nominating her, stating that she felt as though she had achieved a double victory by being able to pursue her passion.
