Captain Narbir Galami (The Royal Gurkha Rifles) – King’s Gurkha Orderly Officer

Captain Narbir Galami enlisted in the British Army in January 2000. He joined A (Delhi) Company, The First Battalion, The Royal Gurkha Rifles (1 RGR), where he quickly established a reputation. In 2008, he became the first Gurkha soldier to achieve both a Distinction and the Top Student award on the demanding Platoon Sergeants’ Battle Course, a landmark achievement reflecting his exceptional leadership potential and instructional ability.

He has deployed to Bosnia, The Falkland Islands and Afghanistan on Operations HERRICK 12, HERRICK 17 and Operation TORAL 7 as Regimental Sergeant Major of the Kabul Protection Unit, where he was responsible for the leadership, welfare and discipline of approximately 1,500 personnel drawn from multinational NATO contingents. During Operation HERRICK 17, his platoon transformed observation post STERGA 2 into a critical intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition and reconnaissance hub, making a significant contribution to the mission and earning formal recognition from the Commander.

His appointments have included instructor at Infantry Training Centre (ITC) Catterick and Infantry Battle School Brecon, where he became only the second Gurkha Colour Sergeant to serve as a full-time instructor. He subsequently held the key leadership appointments of Company Sergeant Major and Regimental Sergeant Major of 1 RGR, and completed numerous overseas exercises in Australia, Malaysia, Canada, Austria, Malawi, Kenya, Belize, France, Thailand, Singapore and New Zealand.

Following commissioning in May 2020, he served as a Platoon Commander in Gurkha Company, ITC Catterick, before being appointed Second in Command of A (Delhi) Coy from 2022 to 2024. During this period, he played a pivotal role in the Battalion’s move to Brunei, overseas training exercises in Thailand and New Zealand, and the delivery of induction training for Recruit Intake 2023. He later served as Unit Welfare Officer, where he was instrumental in the successful execution of the Battalion’s 2025 relocation to the United Kingdom. He was the first Gurkha Late Entry Officer to be appointed Adjutant of 1 RGR, a landmark appointment in the Regiment’s history. During this tenure, he also deployed to Kenya as the Battle Captain.

In July 2026, he assumed the prestigious appointment of King’s Gurkha Orderly Officer, an honour that recognises his distinguished service and standing within the Brigade of Gurkhas.
