Personnel from The Second Battalion, The Royal Gurkha Rifles (2 RGR) deployed as the Roulement Infantry Company (RIC) to the Falkland Islands in support of UK sovereignty and regional stability. Three Companies deployed on rotation, with C Company taking over the final two months before handing over to 3 Parachute Regiment. This deployment was important for Intake 24, as it was their first overseas exercise.

Exercise CAPE KHUKURI 3 saw C Company conduct company level training on the rugged and unforgiving land. Attacks spanned the rocky hills as we battled not only the ‘dushman’ but the unpredictable weather. It was exhilarating to see the integration of SP weapons and tri-service assets, with the thunder of mortars during the live fire tactical training phase being trumped only by the low flying emergency close air support sorties from the Royal Air Force Typhoons. From patrol overwatch to real-time reconnaissance, the integration of drones is beginning to transform how soldiers moves more effectively under aerial overwatch and the ability to strike with greater precision. This enhancement to our decision-making, reduces risk, and increases our effectiveness in complex terrain.

Support was provided for a Junior Leadership Cadre, focussing on the combat estimate and orders, unpacking the mechanics behind tactical actions. Physical fitness was maintained through a ‘Brecon inspired’ 5-mile run after a long attack ensuring that the week was finished off properly. This helped to prepare the platoon for the challenge of future operational demands.

The RIC is directed to conduct patrols helping to maintain the security of the Islands, through littoral analysis, helicopter landing site recces and identifying comms blackspots. The secondary aim of the patrols is to engage with landowners through key civil-military cooperation (CIMIC) tasks. This included participating in farm work to better understand local culture, and their way of life. We delivered ‘messing” which further strengthened bonds with the community, as it allowed us to respectfully share our unique culture, leaving behind a lasting and positive impression of the Gurkhas.

Our time as the RIC saw the re-kindling of inter-operability taskings, including the deployment of a patrol from HMS FORTH. The amphibious landing was an exciting opportunity for those who took part, working alongside our sister force. We were grateful for this opportunity and sea sickness tablets. The Quick Reaction Force maintained a high state of readiness, on standby 24/7, with the capability to deploy within 30 minutes to 2 hours to provide rapid support to other units across the islands.

Beyond operational duties, life at Mount Pleasant Complex (MPC) was very active. Platoons enjoyed competitive team sports and regular gym sessions, fitness challenges and the British Army Warrior Fitness beastings kept everyone in top shape. Not to mention securing 1st and 3rd Place in the MPC Volleyball competition. Cultural celebrations allowed us to celebrate and share our culture with other personnel from across the tri-service environment.
