Gurkha ARRC Support Battalion Goes Drone Racing

Soldiers from Gurkha Allied Rapid Reaction Corps Support Battalion marked a new milestone in early July by taking part in the inaugural Royal Logistic Corps (RLC) Drone Racing Competition hosted by 7 Regiment RLC in Abingdon.

With only two experienced pilots, the team quickly adapted – training first on simulators in the 7 Regiment RLC gaming suite before moving to the indoor drone hangar, echoing the Ukrainian “Killhouse” approach to developing drone operators.

Across two days, the soldiers showed rapid improvement and posted competitive timings. Although they did not reach the podium, their progress and enthusiasm stood out.

Lance Corporal Dhiren said the competition “gave me a valuable new hands‑on experience, which boosted my confidence and improved my drone flying skills.”

Lance Corporal Subas Tamang noted, “I improved my precision flying, speed control and decision‑making under pressure.”

Private Ankit Singjali added, “I gained a better understanding of modern warfare through the practical experience with uncrewed aerial systems during this competition.”

Drone racing is increasingly relevant in modern conflict, offering an accessible way for soldiers to build confidence and skills on uncrewed aerial systems. The team looks forward to developing this capability further.
