Gurkha Recruit Intake 26 Experience Adventure Training

Adventure Training (AT) in the British Army is designed to build leadership, teamwork, physical robustness, and moral courage through demanding outdoor activities. With these aims at the forefront, Gurkha Recruit Intake 26 undertook a four day AT package at RAF Halton, with a programme that delivered valuable lessons, personal growth, and unforgettable experiences.

The first day began with an exhilarating ascent of Ingleborough, marking the first UK hill climb for many recruits. Assigned to Group Five, I joined my team in navigating steep cliffs and sweeping green landscapes. Each member took turns leading the route, reinforcing confidence and shared responsibility. We reached the summit by early afternoon, enjoying packed lunches and capturing the achievement with photographs. The descent proved equally rewarding, ending with well earned rest and refreshments before returning to camp.

Our second day took us to the West View Better Health Leisure Centre for Indoor Rock Climbing. After learning essential techniques, including knot tying and the use of belay devices. We tested ourselves on routes of increasing difficulty. The activity challenged our physical endurance while strengthening trust, communication, and mutual support within the team.

The third day featured a heartfelt farewell event for departing staff. The evening showcased vibrant cultural performances, including the traditional Kukuri dance and lively Dohori singing. These moments of shared heritage fostered camaraderie and strengthened bonds across the company. The celebrations concluded with a communal meal and preparations for the final day of training.

The final day focused on mental agility through a debate competition and a military knowledge quiz. Representing 2 Section, one of our members overcame early nerves to help secure a debate victory, a clear demonstration of growing confidence, communication skills, and personal development.

This AT package proved to be an exceptional opportunity for both personal and professional growth. The experiences gained from physical challenges to cultural connection and intellectual competition, have strengthened our resilience and prepared us for the demands of Army life.

The confidence and teamwork developed during these four days will continue to support us throughout our careers as Gurkha soldiers.
