A team from the Infantry Battle School (IBS), Gurkha Wing Mandalay, participated in the Army Inter Unit Volleyball Championships 2024 at the Aldershot Garrison Sports Centre. The top four teams from the UK South, UK North, and the Midlands were eligible to compete in the championship.
IBS, a minor unit of the Brigade of Gurkhas based in the Midlands, UK, had to compete against other units to secure a spot as one of the top four teams to secure a place at the Army Championship. On January 24, 2024, we competed in the UK Midlands Inter Unit Volleyball Championships, where nine teams, including major and minor units, participated. Our team emerged victorious and was crowned the Champions of UK Midlands volleyball 2024.
The Army Championship took place on February 5, 2024, in Aldershot. Despite facing tough opponents like The First Royal Gurkha Rifles, the defending champions, we were defeated in the semi-finals. However, we managed to secure the third position overall.
Securing the third position out of 11 strong teams was a remarkable achievement for our minor unit. It was a thrilling opportunity to showcase our volleyball skills. Our success was attributed to our team’s unity and rigorous training. Captain Bel Bahadur Gurung, our most experienced player, provided exceptional leadership, guidance, and advice, which played a crucial role in our success. Lance Corporal Manmohan Ale led the team, with Sergent Rashon Gurung managing the team effectively.
