Major Subaraj Sunuwar – Gurkha Major Queen’s Gurkha Signals

Major Subaraj Sunuwar was born in the village of Kunvu Kansthali, Ramechhap, in the Bagmati Province of Nepal. Growing up with echoes of Gurkha valour, his destiny was inextricably linked to military tradition. At just 18, driven by ambition and a passion to follow in his father’s formidable footsteps, he enlisted into the Brigade of Gurkhas on 30 January 1996. Following nine months of Basic Combat Infantry Training at Church Crookham, he joined the Queen’s Gurkha Signals (QG SIGNALS) as a telecommunications operator.

Over a diverse career, he has served at Regimental duty in the UK and worldwide, including postings in Brunei and operational deployments to Qatar, Iraq, and Libya. Major Subaraj has extensive experience, including a tenure as a military training instructor with 4 (Military Training) Squadron in Blandford. His Non-Commissioned Officer career culminated in his appointment as Regimental Quartermaster Sergeant (Accounts) within the 30th Signal Regiment at Bramcote.

Upon commissioning in April 2017, he served as a Troop Commander in the 22nd Signal Regiment, providing combat and command support to the NATO Allied Rapid Reaction Corps Headquarters. He subsequently transitioned to Operations Officer for the newly reformed 247 Gurkha Signal Squadron, 16th Signal Regiment in Stafford. In July 2020, he was appointed Second-in-Command of 250 Gurkha Signal Squadron, 30th Signal Regiment, where he led the squadron during an exercise in Sweden in support of the Standing Joint Force Headquarters. Following his tenure as Regional Career Management Officer at Regimental Headquarters QG SIGNALS, he was selected for promotion to Major in 2022. As a Major, he commanded a squadron within the 3rd (UK) Division Signal Regiment and subsequently served as Quartermaster (Technical) at the Blandford Garrison Support Unit. In March 2026, Major Subaraj assumed the prestigious appointment of Gurkha Major, QG SIGNALS.
